The sweet taste of the south

Shaken Creek Farms produces four varieties of Southern Highbush blueberries in Pender County, North Carolina.

Our harvest begins around the 15th of May and extends through late June.

Big nutrition in a small package

Blueberries are a great source of dietary fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and manganese. They also have one the highest antioxidant levels of all common fruits and vegetables. No wonder they’re called a superfood!

+ Where can I buy Shaken Creek Farms blueberries?

For visitors of our farm at 7429 Old Maple Hill Road, we have a u-pick operation that is open daily from 10am - 6pm. We also sell pre-picked 5- and 10-pound boxes. It’s best to give us a call at (910) 663-1853 before driving out, as weather conditions and berry ripening dictates when we’re open. Our berries are also sold under the American Blueberries label in grocery stores on the east coast.

+ Do I need to wash the berries?

We recommend rinsing your berries, but not until just before using them. Water accelerates the deterioration of the blueberry skin and will severely shorten their shelf life, even in the refrigerator.

+ How should I store my blueberries?

Refrigerate fresh blueberries when you get them home in a covered bowl or container. They will keep for one to two weeks. After that time, it’s best to freeze them. To do so, simply pour your dry berries into a plastic freezer bag and pop them in the freezer. If you prefer to wash them first, pat them dry and spread them out on a cookie sheet to freeze before transferring to a container. You can use them all winter long on cereal or in blueberry recipes!

+ What is the blue-grey haze on the surface of the berries? Is it safe to eat?

Known as the “bloom,” the waxy, silvery-white substance on the surface of grapes, blueberries, and certain plums acts as a barrier against insects and bacteria and helps to seal in the fruit’s moisture. The bloom is also a sign of freshness, since it fades with time and handling. It does not need to be washed off.

+ Are your berries organic?

In order to maintain the health and safety of our plants, they are minimally treated to prevent disease and ward off pests. As farmers, we value the quality of our crops, the safety and satisfaction of our patrons, and the responsible stewardship of the local environment all in equal measure. While our farm is not Certified Organic, our practices reflect our values just as much for ourselves as for our patrons.
